The Ontario Superior Court has given the go-ahead to Sears Canada to proceed with a full liquidation of its remaining 130 stores.

Although Swift Current hasn't housed a Sears since May 12, 2016, former owner Corrine Rutt wasn't surprised when she heard the fate of one of Canada's biggest retailers.

"I'm not surprised, not at all," she said. "Sears was not the same company (it used to be). When we gave our notice, that's the reason we gave our notice because they were going downhill so bad they didn't care about their customers. It was awful."

The Hometown Store (Sears) opened its doors at the end of October in 2007 and Rutt reflected on their time providing services to residents of the southwest.

"It was a lifeline for a lot of people because you could buy everything through Sears," she explained. "It was definitely a lifeline, especially here I find more so than maybe in other places. We still have customers coming and they're sad to see it go, it's too bad."

The store carried appliances, mattresses, electronics, and lawn & garden products, with the soft goods being ordered-in.
