It was a day filled with kickflips, fun, and some competition as Swift Current Skateboarding Inc. held a skateboarding competition at the Lt. Col. Clifton Centre. on Saturday afternoon.

The day saw kids of all ages and all skill levels show off their tricks to spectators and judges.

President of Swift Current Skateboarding Inc. Derek Hartley said that he was thrilled with how the event went.

"It went unbelievably well," he said. "I think everyone was pretty stoked and excited about everything we did. We've had positive feedback from the kids and the spectators. I'm glad we did it, and hopefully, we can do it again this summer."

Hartley added that they hoped a few more people attended but, overall, says he was happy with the turnout.

Harley said that they wanted to host the event as a way to get more people involved in skateboarding within the community.

"We just wanted as many people from the community to come out, whether it was skateboarding or being a spectator, we wanted the whole community to enjoy this event."

The event saw kids from as young as five years old all the way up to 22 participate in three different categories: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. The top three skaters in each category based on the judge's score received prizes.

Hartley said that the event wasn't about the competition but about having fun and getting the word out about skateboarding.

"We would like to see everyone who enjoys the sport of skateboarding be able to be involved in what we're doing," he said. "We just wanted to make it the best we could and make it available to the community. We are trying to do is make skateboarding available regardless of skill level. If you have a passion for our sport, we would like to get you involved."

He added that perhaps the best thing about the event was seeing some skaters that had learned how to skate fromSwift Current Skateboarding Inc. participate.

"We host Thursday night skateboard night from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday nights and some of those beginners had never stepped foot on a skateboard until they joined our club we have going on, and they were competing in the competition today. They didn't necessarily place or anything but to get in front of that many people and try to show off what they've learned is a pretty big accomplishment for us."
