The Swift Current Airport will receive funding through the province's Community Airport Partnership Program

Fifteen community airports in Saskatchewan will be sharing $700,000 in provincial funding for upgrades.

The funding comes from the province's Community Airport Partnership program, which aims to provide eligible airports with stable financial assistance to improve infrastructure.

"The program helps offset costs associated with rehabilitations and upgrades to a network of regional community airports, and it's a 50/50 cost-sharing program," said Steve Shaheen with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure. "We're ensuring a network of airports in place to enhance some of the economic development sectors like tourism, oil and gas, agriculture and social development. The regional airports obviously play a critical role in addressing safety and security concerns, and assist in the delivery of air ambulance, medivac and STARS services."

Six airports in the southwest will see a share of the money. They are in Swift Current, Shaunavon, Maple Creek, Lucky Lake, Gravelbourg and the RM of Frontier, and Shaheen adds the funding will help fund upgrades like runway and tarmac resurfacing, line repainting and asphalt repairs.

The approved funding amounts and projects follows:

  • Gravelbourg - $66,500 for lighting, taxiway and apron repairs and resurfacing
  • Lucky Lake - $45,000 for crack seal runway, asphalt repairs and repainting runway lines
  • Maple Creek - $21,629 for runway and tarmac resurfacing and repainting runway lines
  • RM of Frontier - $2690 for repainting runway lines
  • Shaunavon - $35,313 for slurry seal and paint runway lines
  • Swift Current - $32,500 for pavement overlays and perimeter fence
