The second-annual Gull Lake fishing derby reeled in some great weather and $1,000 for the Elk's Hall.

The derby held on Saturday saw 10 teams set up tents, drill some fishing holes, and do some ice fishing to raise money for the Elk's Hall so they can repair their roof.

g stuff like this. It doesn't matter if we take a loss every once in a while, we'll still keep at it. As long as those guys are having fun being out there and getting together doing it, we will keep going."

He added they were able to raise the money through donations, a 50/50, and the registration.

Gibson said that the fishing derby was just the start of the fundraising needed for the Elk's hall repairs.

"It's a start. We have a long ways to go," he said. "We're just starting to raise funds, so we have a longs way to go but every little bit help."

The derby kicked off at 9 a.m. and ran until 4 p.m. and saw the teams compete against each other to see who could catch the longest fish.

It featured locals from Gull Lake, Shaunavon, and the surrounding area and even some from Medicine Hat.

Gibson said that they only caught eight fish which was down from last year when they caught 20.

First place went to Derek and Jen Moe from Shaunavon as they caught the longest fish at 71 centimetres. They also had the third-longest.
