Although they wrapped up a successful traffic blitz named "Operation Handsfree" a few weeks ago, local police aren't about to let up on offenders who are continuing to use electronic devices while driving.

Swift Current Regional Traffic Services is currently in meetings looking to identify new enforcement strategies as they continue to prioritize cracking down on the use of handheld units while driving.

Sgt. Dale Morgan with local traffic services branch is finding a new trend is beginning to develop with distracted drivers.

"What we're seeing, and it's even more apparent when driving in a personal vehicle, is that texting has seen to have gone off the steering wheel and more into people's laps", Morgan says.

"If a person is involved in a collision where it's established that eye contact was not on the road or that they're busy doing something else, they could face dangerous criminal driving charges."
