With the winter-like weather starting to settle in, it may throw a wrench in some tricker-or-treaters' plans this evening.

According to Environment Canada, Swift Current is expecting periods of snow with the temperature expected to dip down to minus three tonight.

Cypress Health Region's Consulting Medical Health Officer Dr. David Torr said it's important for children to add some extra layers of clothes below their costumes tonight.

"With temperatures in a low, it's really important to keep that in mind that they will be more exposed to the cold and more affected by the cold than we adults would be," he said. "It's important to have appropriate clothing underneath the costume. The costume is nice and fancy but it's usually made of light material and so have warm clothing underneath and protecting your fingers and extremities is very key."

The weather might not be the only battle kids will be enduring tonight as the race to collect more candy will be taking place too.

"Of course it's not good to take too much sugar in in such short periods of time," Torr explained. "Besides affecting your teeth even your body system gets quite challenged and at the same time, you have a child being quite hyper and it might even contribute to sleep disturbances. It's important to have some control over the candy they are taking at any particular time."

Torr also added that it's important to watch expiration dates on the candy the children collect and to make sure it's being stored properly.
