The Cypress Health Region has received $839,000 from the Provincial Government through the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative to help patients in the southwest get better access to surgical care.

Crystal McKaig, the Health Region's Program Manager for Surgical Services, said the part of the funding has been set aside for new capital equipment, “I know what piece of equipment we will be purchasing with that are two new sets of operating lights for our two seaters here in Cypress.”

McKaig adds that they are continuing toward meeting their targets, “Our goal for this coming year is to have no patient wait longer than 6 months for surgery by the end of the 2013 year. This past month we actually only have 7 patients waiting longer than 6 months for surgery already and we're just at the beginning of the year so we hope to keep moving along well with that target.”

The funding will also be allocated to home care, therapy services and to cover various hospital costs like salaries and surgical supplies.

The Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative was started in 2010 with a goal to reduce surgical wait times in the province to no more than three months by the year 2014.
