Saturday afternoon, the Herbert school gymnasium was the site of the first-ever 'May Mayhem Ball Hockey Tournament'.

The tournament featured 30 players in three teams from ages 16 and up compete against each other to raise funds for the Herbert Recreation Board.

Chris Schaw, one of the organizers of the hockey tournament said that despite having some teams drop out everything went great.

"It went really well," he said. "We had a smaller turnout than what we were anticipating but it was our first time putting an event like this on. Everyone that did show up, did have a good time and everyone had lots of fun, so that's the main thing."

Schaw noted that to be able to support the community is something they were excited to do.

"It's been great. Herbert is not the biggest community. A bunch of us are locals. We live in Herbert and work in Herbert and play hockey in Herbert and to give and be able to help out, it really benefits us in the end. We get more spaces to play, we get to update to our local community centre, so it's been great."

Schaw said that they wanted to host the tournament after CBC's play on tournament and Swift Current's Local Emissions Cup was cancelled.

"We play hockey every Sunday and we wanted to get into some tournaments and there weren't any," he said. "Not having the means to go out and play is something we were all kind of disappointed with. We thought why don't we actually host one. The Herbert rec board is doing some fundraising so thought if we could get enough turnout maybe we could help them raise some money and also for us to have a tournament to go out and play in and have some fun."

Schaw said that the money raised will help the hockey and curling rink.

"All the funds raised, anything that's profiting is going directly to the Herbert town recreation board. They are currently raising funds to put in a new chiller system and concrete, in the hockey rink and curling rink."

Schaw added that he hopes that for next year they are able to have more teams and raise more money and looks forward to making the tournament an annual event and continuing to grow the tournament for the years to come.
