Herbert Co-op members gather to hear the result of the vote

Members of the Herbert Co-op have overwhelmingly approved a proposed merger with the Pioneer Co-op.

Out of 240 votes cast, 211 supported the merger.

"When you go into an amalgamation like this it's always really nice to know that you have a huge majority in the community," said Pioneer Co-op General Manager Stu Dyrland. "It just makes our job a lot easier."

Dyrland was already manging the Herbert operations as part of a recent agreement. If the Pioneer Co-op membersip approves the merger they will take over officially in February.

"With the consolidation that has taken place already... I think we will be able to operate it with the same earnings we do in Pioneer," Dyrland said.

Herbet Co-op Board of Directors President Dale Cannon felt the very existance of the store was at stake.

"If we weren't going to amalgamate we were going to lose our store," Cannon said. "With an amalgamation... there will be a Co-op store in our community for many years to come."
