A Friday afternoon grass fire near Simmie knocked a Golden West Radio station off air.

The fire affected Shaunavon CJSN Radio station's SLT Link that is located southwest of the Hamlet of Simmie.

"CJSN was off air for a few minutes until we got the work around link up in progress," said Mike Saretsky, Station & General Sales Manager for Swift Current's Golden West Radio Broadcasting. "An STL Link is a station-to-transmitter link and it's how our two stations in Shaunavon and Swift Current communicate to each other."

The power line going into the STL Link blew off and a spark that hit the grass surrounding the tower started the fire.

"The link is still currently down and we're using other sources to keep both radio stations on air right now," he said. "We will continue to make sure that CJSN is broadcasting around the clock and in the future, we might change to a web-based solution."

The Shaunavon Fire Department was called to the blaze at 1:55 p.m. and, as of Monday afternoon, the Swift Current Online Newsroom is awaiting comment.
