The Town of Shaunavon, along with the Shaunavon and District Fire and Rescue Committee, has announced that the Shaunavon Fire Hall has been re-named.

It is now the Gordon Speirs Fire Hall.

Gordon is being recognized for his years of service on the Shaunavon Fire Department as well as his time on Shaunavon Town Council.

Shaunavon Mayor, Grant Greenslade, says Speirs is truly deserving of this recognition. "A past resident of our community contacted me wondering if we would consider recognizing Gord Speirs for all of his efforts with the town, and especially the Fire Hall..the Fire Committee. So, it's a very good thing to do to somebody whose given so much to our community."

Speirs was honored to receive the recognition. He told the newsroom, "I'm very honored to have this happening. Certainly don't deserve it, or didn't think that it was every to be, but I'm very honored."

Gordon joined the Shaunavon Fire Department in 1945, and served as Fire Chief from 1949 until 1991. He talks about how fire fighting as changed over the years. "Not as much since I was Fire Chief as it did in the early years when we started out with literally no equipment and no protective services and that sort of thing. But I think, since then, there's been more types of education for the new coming members."

Speris also served two terms as an alderman on Shaunavon Town Council from 1968 to 1974, and again from 1991 to 1994, and was Mayor of Shaunavon from 1994 until 1997.

There will be an official ceremony with a plaque unveiling this July at the Fire Hall during Boomtown Days.
