The community of Swift Current was welcomed with open arms last Friday night for a drive-in movie at Kinetic Park.

The event, hosted by Innovation Credit Union, was as an alternative to Picnic In The Park that typically takes place in the summer months.

The event has been a staple in the community of Swift Current for nearly 30 years and unfortunately had to be cancelled for the second consecutive year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Marketing Specialist for the Innovation Credit Union, Malina Combres said that the drive-in movie option became a solution given the restrictions and the want to still give back to the community.

“We really still wanted to get back to the community and provide events for member appreciation and so that led us to a drive-in movie just because that is something that we were able to offer our community within the current restrictions,” she said.

The event was free for anybody to attend and showed the new Disney movie, ‘Raya and the Last Dragon.’

Also available on site was a concession stand, with items costing only a dollar each and free popcorn available.

Combres views the event as a success, especially with COVID-19 cases on the rise.

“We had, it was over 100 vehicles and there were approximately about 350 attendees, so we were very happy,” she added.

As for looking towards next year, the future is unclear.

“This was an alternative event, and so we'll just have to kind of, you know, wait and see, kind of what our current environment is and kind of what that event will look like next year,” she concluded.
