The RCMP are remaining fairly tight-lipped about a potential pipe bomb they destroyed in Swift Current in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It all began around 1 a.m. on Thursday when the Swift Current City RCMP were notified of a suspicious package resembling a pipe bomb in a parking lot on the 400 block of Herbert Street East.

"Upon arriving there, they determine the item was suspicious enough to contact our explosives disposal unit," Devin Pugh a Staff Sargent of the South District of 'F' Division with the RCMP said. "They came out from Regina and inspected the package and on a precautionary purpose destroyed the package."

The RCMP release yesterday afternoon noted they found three items at scene and Pugh confirmed they were destroyed at the same location.

"That's always our main focus is public safety first," he said. "And to ensure that nobody was in the area and nobody was exposed to any danger at that time."

Pugh added that RCMP's next steps will depend on what information comes forward and what the 'object' turns out to be.

"We're continuing our investigation to determine the status of the object and the origin of where it came from," he said.

If you have any information regarding this incident the Swift Current City RCMP would like you to contact them.
