The upgrades to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex are nearing completion just in time for teams to start hitting the ice.

Installation of the new sound system is expected to be finished by this weekend joining the new lighting the facility recently had done.

Chris Pool, facilities manager with the City of Swift Current, said the new LED lighting is more consistent with daylight, making a big difference.

"I think they're pretty amazing," he said. "They look really nice, the light consistency I can't tell you how much better it is than the old system which was decent when we installed it as well... Just the general brightness of the ice surface now is pretty amazing."

The lighting project cost roughly $278,000 with the Swift Current Broncos paying $36,000 of that for the coloured and programmable lighting aspect.

"The technology is pretty sweet," Pool said. "What the users will be able to do with it, well the users being the Broncos, will be able to do with those types of features that they come with are pretty cool. I think the fans coming to the rink will be pretty excited to see the capabilities anyway."

The lighting upgrades allowed the City to nearly cut the number of lights in half going from 84 to 44, a move which the City hopes could save them about 20 cent on the facility's hydro bill per year.

The sound system upgrades are for the north and south side of the rink and include new speakers and amplifiers.

"What it's going to do is help give a fuller sound in that facility from the bottom level up to the top concourse there it will be more of a complete system with a little bit more bass," Pool said.
