When it comes to cooking that turkey this Thanksgiving, it's important to make sure that bird is cooked safely.

Jacqueline Treen, Senior Public Health Inspector for the Cypress Health Region, reminds everyone to thaw or store the turkey at refrigeration temperature, around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and wash your hands frequently during the preparation.

She adds to make sure the bird is thoroughly cooked to an internal temperature of 176 degrees Fahrenheit, checking the temperature in the thickest part of the meat with a clean probe thermometer.

Treen recommends that you avoid cooking stuffed turkeys, as an overstuffed turkey can insulate the bird and make it harder to reach that internal temperature of 176 F.
