Your last chance to host a Katimavik volunteer is coming up.

The federal government has cut funding to the youth volunteer program that puts Canadian children in communties to work and experience local culture.

It appears cost was the major factor.

"It's been a place for a long time," said Cypress Hills MLA David Anderson. "I guess the decision was made that we needed to cut it because... it's very expensive. I think the minister was using the number of $28,000 per participant. It's seen as an expensive program and the decision was made that we were going to do some trimming throughout government."

Golden West Radio has been unable to get any comments from the Katimavik organization on the end of their program.

The local chapter is still looking for homes that could host one of their Katimavik volunteers during their spring visit.

Their 10 volunteers live in one house together and, for 2 weeks during their rotation, will get out of the house and connect with a local family.

Katimavik describes it as an opportunity for them to discover the community, experience Saskatchewan culture and be immersed in their second language.

The families get $10 per day to house a volunteer.
