A pair of milestones have been reached in the last couple of weeks for construction at the Chinook Power Station.

Five kilometres worth of power lines were installed allowing the $680 million project to be connected to the power grid.

Jordan Jackle, a spokesperson for SaskPower, said as of this month all major pieces have arrived on site and they recently connected the station to the power grid to start energizing the equipment.

"It's really actually kind of funny to think about providing power to a power station, but that's exactly what's going on here," he said. "Until this point, all this work has been done with electricity provided by generators, now though that it's connected to the grid we can actually start doing more testing and work that requires more electricity to do."

The other milestone the site is celebrating is that they've worked over one million hours on the project and nobody has been hurt during that time.

"It's a pretty significant milestone reached by our employees there as well as the contractors on this project and we couldn't be prouder of reaching that milestone," Jackle said.

The site has had hundreds of employees work on it so far an once it's complete in late 2019 will have 24 permanent jobs.
