More upgrades to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex are on the way after new lighting was approved at Swift Current city council last night.

The City had over $300,000 left from last year's floor slab replacement project and is using $242,641.86 plus GST of it towards new LED lighting over the iPlex floor, spectator lighting, and coloured and programmable lighting. The Swift Current Broncos have agreed to pay $36,000 for the latter of the lighting.

Dean Robson, the general manager of community services for the City of Swift Current, said normally the leftover money from projects gets allocated to a place of immediate need but this time it didn't.

"Where we were lucky was that we could keep that money that was leftover [in excess of] $300,000 and put it back into the iPlex, know that it's going to save us later," he said. "We're pretty fortunate and it worked out pretty good."

The new LED lighting over the iPlex floor will reduce the light count from 84 to 44 and save roughly 20 per cent on the City's hydro bill per year according to Robson.

"Lots of energy efficiencies," he said. "Now we have the opportunity to add in a little bit of colour and a little bit of glitter. Like I said just to key on some of those areas where it draws your eye to goalie (Stuart) Skinner or whoever's coming out or perhaps in the PBR it's one end or the other."

With the TV streams improving and the WHL requirements for lighting expected to increase in the short future, the City thought they should act now.

"Anything that we can do [for upgrades], we're going to, we're going to meet them early to the best of our ability," Robson said.
