Sports may be on hold, and the WHL is still a few weeks away.

WHL mascots, including Charlie Horse, are still hard at work. But with no fans in the stands, they have had to get creative.

The WHL and its 22 member clubs have sent their mascots out to spread some Christmas cheer.

Announced last week, the league released its "Tees for Toys" campaign, selling limited edition tee-shirts to raise money for a charity of each team's choice and ensure that as many children as possible get presents under the tree at Christmas.

Ryan Stricker is the Senior Manager of Business Operations and Corporate Partnerships with the Swift Current Broncos.

"Those tee-shirts are branded with our own Charlie Horse and are available in youth and adult sizes. Each Tee-shirt is available online for a cost of 20 dollars. And 7 dollars of each shirt sold will go to a charity here in town."

The charity of choice for the Swift Current Broncos is the Newcomer Welcome Centre.

It was a match that Stricker says they were drawn to because of shared values.

"What we were drawn to with the Newcomer Welcome Centre was their ability to promote diversity, participation and integration in southwest Saskatchewan. It's definitely something that we here at the Broncos believe in and do see a cohesiveness there with our values and their values there locally as well."

Stricker adds that the initiative is being actively promoted not only through the WHL and the Newcomer Welcome Centre, but they've enlisted influencers that they've reached out to promote the message of the program on their own social media platforms.

The four individuals that they chose for that are Jim Dekowny from the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation, Karla Wiens of the Swift Current and District Chamber of Commerce, Karli Wong with the Newcomer Welcome Centre, and Dr. David Stock with Anchor Dental.

"We were looking for individuals who, one wanted to also support the Newcomer Welcome Centre on this initiative. We were looking for individuals who have the ability to spread that message even further and that were known in the community but also have a following online on social media as well."
