Six Saskatchewan residents were chosen for their years of serving others, their communities and the country, and were presented Diamond Jubilee medals this past week by Prince Charles when he toured the province.

World War Two veteran Hewitt Murch and arts and culture promoter Shann Gowan from Swift Current both received a medal.

Gowan is a driving force behind events like the Blenders live music series and the Windscape Kite Festival, but although grateful, she says the work she does in the city is not to gain recognition.

"I actually put on music events and those kind of festivals because I really like music and it's something I love, so it makes it really easy to do it, and recognition is nice," Gowan said. "I think that we've really banded together, we're working as a team, and I think that that's really helped. We're getting recognition in other places, provincially and federally, and I think that's important, and I think we are doing a pretty good job."

Gowan adds that she is going to display her medal in her office.
