The City of Swift Current is making a big investment into the historic Lyric Theatre, after council approved a conditional $250,000 grant to the theatre over two years.

The grant is dependent on the Lyric receiving a matching grant from Ottawa which could be worth up to $500,000.

The Lyric is trying to raise their share, and Gwen Uher, President of the Southwest Cultural Development Group, is thrilled that the city is investing the money, and is pleased that they are showing that they support what the group is doing and that they believe in the theatre and the downtown.

Uher adds, so far, the campaign is going well.

The campaign is supporting the group's project to restore the Lyric Theatre in time for its 100th anniversary in 2012.
