The town of Maple Creek could be getting close to $2 million each from the federal and provincial governments for wastewater treatment upgrades.

The pair of governments announced in Regina on Tuesday morning they'd both be investing over $27 million each into eight water and wastewater projects in Saskatchewan.

Warren Kaeding, government relations minister with the Saskatchewan government, said they chose those eight projects due to a variety of reasons.

"Certainly looking at emergent needs in communities, we have communities on the verge of having infrastructure maybe not passing regulations anymore or not being up to code in a certain amount of time," he said. "Like we heard today, communities that are limited in their growth potential. Certainly, as a province, we want to provide every opportunity for our communities and municipalities to grow."

He went on to add some of the communities that will be getting funds have infrastructure dating back decades.

"I think with every community we're always looking at significant infrastructure deficits," Kaeding said. "We're looking at communities now that have been established for 100-125 years and some have infrastructure that was built at that time."

Maple Creek could receive up to $1.98 million from both governments but would have to fund the remaining costs.
