Swift Current's Market Square was a hit throughout the summer on Saturday mornings and it reached number one on the charts for the Saskatchewan Municipal Awards as well.

The City of Swift Current has been named the first-place winner for the Awards program's 11th year that recognizes local governments' for "innovation and excellence."

It was the seventh year for Market Square, and its use of vendors, music, games for kids, and other entertainment to help the downtown area was noticed.

The City's Executive Assistant to the Mayor and CAO Marlene Johnson said they sent in a nomination and she received word they won a month ago.

"They phoned me and told me I couldn't say anything that we were chosen as first place, and that I had to wait until the media release came out," said Johnson. "So it was like I knew but couldn't say anything. I was so excited."

The final Market Square wrapped up at the end of September, and Johnson said they're preparing for next summer already. But the accolade was very thrilling for her.

"It's really overwhelming, actually. With administration, council support, and year after year, watching it grow and become what it is - a beautiful place for families to come - it's really overwhelming to know that after all that hard work, it's finally being recognized for something as special as it is."

Going into Year 8, Johnson hopes to build on Market Square's success, while keeping it fresh so people keep returning.
