Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer is reacting to Wednesday's Provincial Budget Presentation. Although they weren't explicitly announced, he's hopeful the document will contain funding for some of the city's long-term capital priorities,

“See lots of capital dollars but they are not specific as of yet so hopefully we see some dollars towards planning for long term care. And of course in our budget we have things like the Memorial Drive upgrades and what not through highways partnership so we'll see as we drill down further into the budget how that impacts us in those regards.”

He said he was disappointed that there was no extra money for municipal infrastructure, but he's hopeful he can see a long-term plan for infrastructure in the future.

“With this government they showed that for example with the municipal operating grant when they did introduce something that it was a good sustainable program so we hope going forward that when it comes to infastructure funding we may not get it today but when a program is announced it's going to be worthwhile”

Schafer adds he's not sure how the cuts to funding the Southwest Enterprise Region will impact the community overall, but they will evaluate their options to maintain economic development in the southwest.
