Monday marked the beginning of the spring session in Legislature, and for the first time in over a decade, Swift Current had a new MLA at the table.

Everett Hindley took over the reins as the constituency's MLA on March 12 taking over from former Premier Brad Wall; someone Hindley worked very closely with over his political career.

Following a new speaker being selected, Swift Current's new representative was being sworn during a busy first day.

"A lot to learn right off the top with a pretty steep learning curve I think," Hindley said. "The phrase 'drinking water from a fire hose' is pretty adequate in this case. It was a bit overwhelming, a few nerves I think, but all in all just a great day and just something I can't really describe, it was quite amazing."

The memorable day was made even more special for Hindley as his family was able to join him.

"They had a chance to sit on the floor of the assembly while I walked up there to take the oath and sign the role," he said. "The whole thing was really surreal. As I was walking back and looking at my family sitting there on the floor of the chamber to see my wife, my mom and dad, and my brother and sister, it was pretty neat."

Hindley believes the nearly two decades of working in provincial politics will benefit him greatly - especially having the chance to learn from Wall.

"He really laid the groundwork for how to be an excellent representative for your constituency and for your province," he explained. "I look back on those 18 years of the things that I learned, and I'll use that to my advantage. I think that's the benefit to being able to work with someone like that."

The Swift Current MLA office will be located in the same spot as Wall's was and is expected to be open soon. Hindley noted he is hoping to be at the office most Fridays to meet with residents of the constituency who have concerns.
