Those looking to try ice fishing for the first time have an opportunity this weekend across the province.

This year, the Family Day long weekend is Saskatchewan's annual winter free fishing weekend, which is aimed at encouraging participation in the activity.

Anglers have the chance to haul in a trophy fish from February 18-20, without having to purchase a fishing license.

Despite no requirement of a license, rules and regulations do still remain in effect, including possession limits. As well, free fishing does not apply in national parks for the weekend.

The Ministry of Environment is keying on safety during ice fishing. "Always use caution and common sense. Test the ice thickness before you travel on it. A minimum of 10 cm of good ice is required for walking and 30 cm for light vehicle travel. Wear warm clothing," they stated in a release earlier this week.

Fishing in Saskatchewan attracts more than 250,000 people annually.
