The provincial government has announced new funding to support people with intellectual disabilities.

Starting April 1st, $6.3 million dollars will be used to implement new standards for all day programs funded by the Ministry of Social Services.   $4.6 million is for regular day programs and $1.7 million for day programs with clients that have complex needs.

Minister June Draude explains the funding is to allow residents with special needs to have fun and socialize, and adds the money could be used to for going swimming, to hockey games, the library or other social events.

Each resident has been assessed based on their needs and the funding will be earmarked specifically for them, instead of for the facility they attend, that way if they transfer to another program, they will still have the same amount of support no matter where they go.
