Saturday is the International Day of the Midwife, and the provincial government used the occasion to announce a $500,000 investment for midwifery services in Saskatchewan.
The Cypress Health Region was one of the first in the province to implement a midwifery program, along with the Saskatoon and Regina-Qu'Appelle Health Regions, and there are currently two midwives practicing in the southwest.
"We started our program in June 2010," said Bryce Martin, Executive Director of Communications for the Cypress Health Region. "For the fiscal year June 2010 to March 2011, we had a total of 16 births that were assisted or delivered by the midwives. Last fiscal year, we had a total of 43 births that were assisted by the midwives."
Martin adds the investment will go toward things like recruiting midwives and improving access to midwifery services throughout the province, but the exact allocation to the health regions will be determined through a consultation process.
