The Federal New Democrats have a new leader.

Montreal-area MP Thomas Mulcair was chosen as the successor to the late Jack Layton during the NDP's Leadership Convention in Toronto Saturday, and will take over as the leader of the Official Opposition in Parliament.

Mulcair won the leadership on the fourth and final ballot, claiming 57.2% of the vote over chief rival and former party president Brian Topp's 42.8%. The two were the final candidates after a day-long voting marathon plagued by delays caused by an attempted cyber-attack on the party's website.

Mulcair will not get much rest after his victory, as he will meet with his caucus today and return to Parliament where the Federal Budget will be presented on Thursday.
