Nine new names were unveiled yesterday afternoon as part of the second instalment of Swift Current's Veterans Banner Campaign.

The event held at the Swift Current Museum showed off the banners that will join the seven from last year and hang in Memorial Park for the time around Remembrance Day.

Swift Current Museum Director and Curator Lloyd Begley said it's crucial to remember the veterans of the past and present because of the sacrifices they make.

"It's important to remember those folks in our communities who unselfishly volunteered and went overseas on the behalf of their country," he said. "Many of which didn't come back, for example almost 60,000 Canadians didn't come back from the first world war. So it's important that we remember them and what they did and what Canada did."

Roughly 30 people attended the unveiling with the majority of them being sponsors of the banner program or family of the soldiers being recognized.

"The nine banners this year have been sponsored by people from Swift Current and area," Begley said. "Either a family member, friends, or relatives (of the soldier) sponsored the banner for 2017."

He also said they will continue to add more banners in the years to follow.

"The park will fill up with banners and then we will start using the poles surrounding the park as well," Begley said.

The City of Swift Current's Light & Power crews are expected to put the 16 banners up during the remainder of this week.
