The new Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8 public school to be built in Swift Current now has a name... "École Centennial School".

"What the board had decided to do is to send it out to staff and students and give them the opportunity to submit possible names for the new school," said Liam Choo-Foo, Director of Education for the Chinook School Division. "We got a wide variety of names, and at the end of the day, with the centennial celebration of Swift Current [in 2014] coinciding with our projected opening date for the school, it seemed a pretty natural fit that 'École Centennial School' would be the name."

Choo-Foo added it's another step in their progression toward the new school, which will be part of a joint-use facility with the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division: "We're trying to get our site design finalized, so that will be the next piece. Our architects are working on what they call '33% design', that needs to go to approval to the Ministry of Education, and the next step from there is '66% design', and our goal would be to be able to go to tender in July."

"École Centennial School" will be constructed near the Cypress Regional Hospital in the city's northeast, and is also part of the city's integrated facility concept, which could include a long-term care centre and various recreation facilities.

Liam Choo-Foo talked with reporters about the name of the new school after the Chinook School Board's regular meeting on Monday:
