In a statement released Tuesday, the NDP's Ryan Meili, Leader of the Official Opposition in Saskatchewan, called on the provincial government to investigate any risk posed by SaskTel's relationship with Huawei.

Part of Meili's request was an immediate moratorium on further contacts between SaskTel and Huawei, as well as providing the public with a thorough description of Huawei's involvement with SaskTel.

Huawei's relationship with SaskTel includes a joint agreement to provide 5G service to the University of Regina.

Several countries around the world have already taken steps to block the Chinese company from building their 5G networks.

According to Meili's statement, security experts have raised alarms for years about the risk Huawei poses to people's privacy and to the security of Saskatchewan's networks.
