A new electronic case management system designed to keep track of children in care of the Ministry of Social Services is now up and running across the province.

"Until this time, we were the only province in Canada that still had a paper-based system to keep track of children, so we are on pace with the rest of Canada, and this is absolutely exciting," said Social Services Minister June Draude. "One of the first things that we did as government was start the implementation of this project, so since 2008 we've been working on it. There's been interaction with First Nations and Ministry officials right across the province, so as of May 7th, we're up and running."

Draude says the most important benefits of the new system are that it provides more accurate information and that it's available to the case workers any place, any time: "They can call up clients or the child's name, and they'll be able to get information about that child, and they'll be able to keep better information from other sources."

Draude adds that they have taken many steps to make sure that all of the children's information on the system is kept confidential.
