Swift Current's Airport is now a more attractive destination for pilots, after the city entered into a five-year lease agreement with Touch N Go Aviation for their new cardlock fuel station.

"I've had a lot of feedback from other groups in the industry and other nearby airports that this is definitely a benefit to aviation infrastructure in the southwest," said Airport Superintendent Todd Schultz.

In addition to a $1000 annual lease payment, the city will also collect a fuel concession fee of three cents per litre in the first year, four cents in the second, and five cents in each of the remaining three years, and Schultz says the funds will be used for development at the airport.

"The facility also attracts additional airplanes, so there's indirect benefits to the city as well that these tourists, if you will, come in and use other amenities in the city," Schultz added. "Helicopters use more fuel than a typical airplane and range is limited, so we do see a lot of helicopter traffic now."

The fuel station was installed back in September, and city council approved a lease retroactive to January at their regular meeting on Monday.
