The opening day of last summer's Swift Current Market Square

Swift Current is planning bigger and better things for their summer market square.

The city is hoping to draw around 5000 people into the downtown core every Saturday throughout the summer, and they've also got a new partner.

"The Market Square initiative is expanding this year, as the Swift Current Farmer's Market is joining us downtown every Saturday," said Susan Motkaluk, the Chief Administrative Officer for the City. "Of course, they'll still be at the Swift Current Mall on Thursdays, but they do see this as an exciting new initiative they would like to be a part of, and, of course, we're so excited to have them."

City Council also approved $40,000 for a new 40'x120' tent to accomodate the Farmer's Market, and also to cover their entertainment in case of rain.

"Last year, our very first Market Square got rained out," Motkaluk added. "I was very disappointed by that and I understand that the Saskatchewan weather can be somewhat unpredictable. So what we will do with this tent is not just accomodate the Farmer's Market, but also utilize this space as an alternate location should we get rained out."

Motkaluk says they are also planning special theme days to boost interest, and adds there is still lots of room to grow the event.

The Market Square runs every Saturday throughout the summer starting June 16th at the corner of Central Ave N and Chaplin St in downtown Swift Current.
