A new face among the provincial NDP's team in Swift Current has broken through the ranks to become its president.

Last Tuesday the new president for the NDP in Swift Current, Riley Sharp, was appointed during their annual general meeting.

Sharp, a teacher at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School, said that he is part of the recent push from teachers to join politics.

"The NDP has been very good at drawing attention to some of the funding cuts that the education has received in the last couple of years, and if you look at currently what our NDP membership and executive is made up of, huge numbers of teachers have been coming onboard because of their dissatisfaction with the way things are going."

Being a member of the party for about a year, Sharp is a relatively new addition and was involved in Stefan Rumpel's run at the Swift Current seat during this past winter's byelection. He was the campaign chair, and did some social media work for the party.

Sharp said that a key to success for the NDP in Swift Current lies in the part's past.

"I just look back at the history of the Swift Current NDP and I know that our last two elected MLAs in the 1990s were both teachers in the community that I think really spoke to people and communicated well with them, and I think as long as we continue to put forth good ideas that would suit the people of Swift Current, and stand up for people who are being forgotten or maybe not listened to, I think we have a really bright future ahead of us."
