The Saskatchewan New Democrats have a new leader as the party looks to rebuild after an overwhelming defeat earlier this month.

John Nilson was selected as the new acting leader of the party after a vote held Saturday morning in Regina, and will serve as the opposition leader until the NDP's leadership convention early next year.

Nilson, a long-time MLA for Regina-Lakeview, has been in the NDP caucus since 1995, and served as minister of Justice, Crown Investments Corporation, Health and Environment.

The party was dealt a major blow during the November 7th provincial election when neither leader Dwain Lingenfelter nor deputy leader Deb Higgins were able to be re-elected in their home ridings.

Nilson will be put to work right away for the NDP, selecting a shadow cabinet in time for a winter sitting in the legislature but with just 9 members on the opposition side, some members will have to pull double duty since there are more ministries than NDP MLAs.
