A new program at Great Plains College could help ensure good nursing staff levels for the local health region. The college will work in conjunction with the health region, the University of Regina and SIAST to offer a four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in Swift Current.

SIAST Dean of Nursing Netha Dyck said they expect it, like the college's two year program, to be quite popular, “The practical nursing program in Swift Current is very well subscribed and the level of interest in the program always exceeds the number of seats and so we feel there will be a similar interest in registered nursing in the community.”

Dyck expects a lot of the graduates will end up working in the southwest, “Really it becomes a good recruitment strategy for the health region to offer the education closer to home. It certainly supports that when students gain the education in the community they are more likely to stay in the community for employment.”

The Dean adds that it will be a unique program, “We'll be using blended model for delivery. Which will include some online, as well as some deliver through video conferencing, and others will be where faculty will be on site.”

The first class of registered nurses would start school in the fall of 2013.
