Map of the proposed Keystone Pipeline expansion

A union leader and well-known activist are among dozens of protesters arrested in a demonstration in Ottawa against the Keystone XL pipeline.

The planned pipeline expansion will pass a few kilometers away from Shaunavon.

Dave Coles of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union and Maude Barlow crossed over a police barricade in front of the Peace Tower today and were quietly taken into custody.

The arrests came as orderly lines of about six or seven at a time approached the waist-high fence.

They were among hundreds who gathered to protest the proposed pipeline, which will carry oilsands crude to Texas.
