Who let the humans out?

There were a few in the Swift Current SPCA... but now they're gone.

It must have been something to do with a certain jail and bail - or rather, a 'pound' and bail - to raise money for the non-profit organization that normally just houses cats and dogs.

Since 2014 the Swift Current SPCA has held an annual event where people stay in the shelter off Highway 4 until they get enough funds donated to bail them out.

Yesterday Dan Johnson of the Innovation Credit Union, Justina Sather of Living Sky Casino, and Karla Wiens of the Swift Current Chamber of Commerce spent some time locked up, while people payed more than a combined $3,000 for them to get out.

"$3,000's a nice start," said Swift Current SPCA Development Officer Teresa Cole of the start of their $18 for '18 campaign. "Each month it costs about $25,000 to run the shelter, so this is one of our major fundraisers for the year. All the fundraising we do is for the operations; it's not for any particular project... we're just trying to keep the operation going."

Cole thanked everyone who helped raise money yesterday.

Last year the shelter had over 350 pets through their doors, but things have quieted down a little from a busy fall, where they had nearly 60 cats, to now, as they have a little less than 40 cats and four dogs up for adoption.
