With tick season upon us, attention is needed to help protect pets.

The American Dog Tick is the most common tick found in Saskatchewan, also known as the wood tick. With the weather this year being particularly moist, ticks are in abundance.

When trying to locate a tick on your pets it is important to check behind the ears, legs, or under the tail.

Although it's hard to keep our furry friends out of tall grass and wooded areas, ticks are more prevalent there. There are preventative measures residents can take to protect their pets.

Dr. Charlotte Williams, veterinarian at Hooves and Paws in Elrose, spoke about these preventative measures. "There are oral treatments such as chewables that last a month, that is the one we prefer because we have more control over it," said Williams. "There are ones that last three months, as well as ones you can use topically to prevent ticks. "

If you do happen to find a tick on your pet always remember to remove it properly. The safest way to remove a tick is with tweezers and to not squeeze the body.

It is important to check your pets regularly, and keep them safe this tick season.
