It’s Public Rail Safety Week, and railway police and safety officials are fanning out, stopping cars at select rail crossings to hand out safety pamphlets, and if they catch you doing something illegal, it will cost you.
CP Police Inspector Bill Law says that goes for both drivers and pedestrians. "Our officers are out specifically targeting problem trespass locations as well as crossings where we've seen high risk driving. When we see those people out on the tracks or when offences occur at crossings, people that commit those offences should expect to receive a ticket from our officers."
Inspector Law says there’s been a doubling in the number of accidents involving trains and pedestrians from this time last this year, with at least 24 people struck. Most were killed, including five people in Alberta, three in BC and one in Saskatchewan.
