Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park will be receiving new funding from the provincial government for upgrades.

The upgrades are the next step from the government's $1.5 million plan for facility upgrades and infrastructure improvements in the 2018-19 period.

Byron Davis, executive director of parks infrastructure and capital planning with the province, said that Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park had been the focus of quite a few improvements over the past five years.

"The projects taking place in Cypress Hills this year will be over $250,000, but over the last five years in the southwest region we have spent over $12 million on facility and infrastructure upgrades."

The funding will be going towards campground electricity expansions at Shady Pine Campground, and to the new digital message sign for the park according to the provincial government.

The digital messaging board is already completed, and the electricity expansion is expected to be done in fall.

Davis also said that the upgrades were intended to make parks better equipped to handle the increase in visitation that they have seen recently.

"We are upgrading infrastructure that has worn or is aging, but we also increase park infrastructure, camping, other facilities, to accommodate increased visitation to parks, we have strong visitation, in fact there were almost four million visits in 2017 and so far in this year with the good weather we are on track with those numbers."

Other parks are expected to receive upgrades in the southwestern corner of the province including, Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, Douglas Provincial Park, Danielson Provincial Park, and Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Parks.

"We just finished several major projects at the Sask Landing over the past years including a complete water system upgrade and connection to a regional system as well as road work and other campground work, so there's a lot going on in all the parks in terms of upgrades," explained Davis.

A sewage disposal station was also constructed recently at the Saskatchewan Landing.
