The Swift Current Municipal RCMP had their quarterly delegation at city council Monday, and included was a community policing report.

Staff Sergeant Gary Hodges and Sergeant Kelly Guider were there from the detachment, and they explained that while offences reported or committed in the community were down last month from the previous February, the numbers can be misleading.

There were 404 total occurences in February of 2017, compared to 289 this past February.

Guider alluded to one night last year where there was a series of mischief offences, skewing the stats. Last month’s mischief offences were down to 15 from 45 the previous year. Guider also said the cold February weather might have been a deterrent from people going out and stirring things up.

Nonetheless, the delegates said having a quiet February was very helpful for the office to work on cases still under investigation.

Overall, the number of reported offences for the calendar year to date were down from 777 to 642 the previous year (665 was the number at that point for 2016).

Also to come out of Hodges’ and Guider’s visit to council was a report on an incident Friday night that resulted in a 24-year-old female going into cardiac arrest. A joint effort between police and other responders (they commended Swift Current Fire Chief Denis Pilon, who was in attendance, on his team’s work) resulted in the woman surviving.

Hodges pointed out that females that need CPR have a significantly higher mortality rate than males, adding to the feat of saving the young woman’s life.

The RCMP also announced they’ll hold a town hall meeting April 26 at the Legion Hall.
