The Swift Current animal shelter had a big day yesterday, with a sizable chunk of change being raised during the 5th-annual John Mueller Memorial SPCA Radiothon which was on Magic 97.

Swift Current SPCA President Larry Johnson said while the totals aren't in yet, they might have hit their $25,000 goal.

"We had a beautiful morning, afternoon, and the latter part of the afternoon it just downpoured on us, but we did have a great day and great corporate sponsors showed up and I think we just about made - we're not sure - but I think we just about made our goal that we were looking at of $25,000."

The shelter doesn't get provincial or federal funding, but does receive $50,000 a year from the City. Their operational cost for the year is usually around $325,000, caring for around 350 cats and dogs over a 12-month span according to Johnson.

Johnson expects the final tally for money raised to be in in the near future. Through support from individuals and businesses, he's pretty optimistic despite the fact that things shut down a couple hours early, when it started raining cats and dogs.

"We got caught in that downpour, so everybody was just soaked to the skin by the time we got all the displays down and tents down," he said. "But you know, it was fun."
