The City of Swift Current is continuing their redevelopment work on a trio of former Swift Current school sites.

Work on the St. Joseph School site is the furthest along of the three with a concept plan for residential redevelopment approved one year ago today by city council.

Currently the City is working on a sales package for the property with it expected to be put up on the block sometime this spring for a developer to take over the plan.

Although it's not officially up for sale yet, according to Michael Ruus, general manager of planning and growth development with the City of Swift Current, they've certainly had some interest.

"We've had a few people kicking the tires on the site already," he explained. "Wanting to explore their options to move forward on that project."

No construction date has been pegged by the City for the redevelopment, but once the property is on the market, Ruus believes they will have a better understanding of when it will be built.

As for the old sites where Oman School and Ashley Park School used to sit, the City recently held preliminary focus group meetings with the residents that front directly onto the pair of sites.

"Just to touch base with them and see what their vision is for the future of sites in the city," Ruus stated. "From there we will be putting a summary together of all the feedback from all of the residents and putting it up on the website."

Once preliminary feedback that includes the questions and answers is posted online, then everyone in the general public will be able to comment on the initial ideas.

Both sites will encompass some sort of residential area in their concept plans as required by City infill guidelines under currently adoptive policy.

"Obviously looking at options for redevelopment that would include some housing, it's just a matter of how that occurs on the sites," he said. "That plan is being formed from the feedback and ideas that are coming out of these meetings with the public."

The hope for those two sites is to have an open house in May and have a concept plan in place for June or July to present to council.
