With the summer in full swing, many are taking the time to visit the local beaches and pools and must remember to practice safety precautions when in the water.

Tragically in the past 6 weeks, 6 individuals how drowned in the province, 4 of which were children as Shelby Rushton CEO of the Lifesaving Society of Saskatchewan details.

"The shocking part is these kids. Four not at the same same time but in separate incidents across the province. If we look at last year at the same time we had four drownings and those were all adult males. So the fact that we've had 4 children drown in the last six weeks to us is quite shocking and it's time we start talking about this."

As to why this occurring Rushton suggests that people are simply excited to get out into the water and are still not realizing just how dangerous the water is.

Rushton reminds individuals to take precautions before and when going into the water.

"Knowing what the hazards are so where the drop-offs are at the lake or checking the weather even cause if the wind gets up at all in this province it causes waves on the lake and that right away makes a greater hazard than normal. Also rocks. The sun can be a hazard so people need to keep hydrating because if you get sick your not in a good state either."

In addition, Rushton reminds parents to always keep an eye on their children around the water and keep them within an arms reach within the water.

Should you happen to see someone drowning, Rushton says that individuals who are not trained in water rescue should not attempt to help anyone unless the water is only up to your knees. The safest option is to call 911.
