Swift Current's Safe Places initiative has been active in the city for the last three years, creating cause for reflection at Swift Current's previous city council meeting.

The three-year mark of the program being in Swift Current also marks the end of the cities $15,000 contract with Respect Group Inc., prompting the city to review its impact.

Respect Group Inc. offers the Safe Places initiative to reduce potential risks to children in the workplace.

The contract only applies to the City of Swift Current employees, 95 percent of whom are Youth Certified.

During the three years, 496 trainings were administered through the organization.

Around 1,800 people are now Safe Places Youth Certified according to a report by the City of Swift Current. Approximately 450 of those came in 2018.

The city also provides free Safe Places training for those who get 'pre-authorization' codes.

Kelly Schafer, Safe Places Manager with the City of Swift Current, was presented at city council talking about the contract renewal, and explained where funding for the 'pre-authorization' program.'

"From a funding perspective, Safe Places, our main donator is from the MNP Bronco Alumni Golf Classic. From our partnership with MNP, we received $26,000 in the last three years for Safe Places."

The pre-authorization program has been administered 839 times through both school and sports programs where Safe Places certification was offered. The total savings to citizens created due to the free courses is $25,170.
