It doesn't sound like any ridesharing companies will be coming to Swift Current in the near future.

The provincial government approved regulations on Thursday to allow companies like Uber and Lift into the province as of December 14.

While Minister Responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave hopes to see rideshare companies move into the smaller cities in the province, Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault said they haven't been approached by any of the companies.

"At present, we as the municipality of Swift Current have not heard anything at all to do with any of the ridesharing companies looking to come to Swift Current," Perrault said.

As part of the regulations set by the province, each municipality would have to set their own regulations before any one of the companies could operate in that area.

"We don't have any regulations in place right now," he said. "If there was a group looking to come to Swift Current, that would be something to look at and get some better information on... It's our understanding that Saskatoon and Regina are looking at it and I guess we're in a wait and see kind of attitude."

Amongst Saskatchewan's regulations, rideshare companies are required to hold at least $1 million liability coverage for all drivers and vehicles.
