While Grasslands National Park moves into recovery mode after a large grass fire on the weekend, a local politician is reflecting back on how the community came together.

"We had excellent response from people all around the southwest community here," said RM of Val Marie Reeve Larry Grant.

The grass fire burned 20 kilometers from 1 to 5 kilometers deep in the west block of the park. It made Grant proud to represent the people of the region when seeing so many volunteers give their time and their resources to help limit the damage of the fire.

Larry Grant Interview"Some of those people stayed there all night," Grant noted. "Some of the people that were staying there were not fire department people either. They were just individuals that when they come there, they come until it was over."

He added it's important for anyone starting an agricultural fire to stay on top of it.

"Anytime you go to burn anything it's very important to constantly keep checking over a certain period of time," Grant said. "Hidden embers can remain hidden until you get perfect conditions for them to come out."

The main operation now preventative work on areas that may flare up and work on the frencing that was destroyed in the fire.
